While high water has forced the temporary closure of the popular access road in Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, it also presents an opportunity to enjoy the refuge free of motorized vehicles.

As of Friday, the Refuge access road was closed to vehicle traffic due to high water and flooding conditions brought on by recent rains and snowmelt. Refuge staff will monitor conditions closely and will re-open the road to vehicles as water recedes and safety allows.

In the meantime, foot traffic will be allowed beyond the closure for visitors to enjoy spring birding and fishing opportunities. Visitors may drive 3.5 miles west of Wildlife Education Center and park at the kiosk parking lot to access birding and fishing areas. Upcoming guided refuge tours will begin May 27 and continue through September.

For updates, please visit the refuge web site at: http://bearriver.fws.gov, call the Visitor Services line at 435-734-6425, or follow the refuge on Facebook. Specific questions may be directed to Bob Barrett (Project Leader) or Sharon Vaughn (Deputy Project Leader).

It might not be as convenient as driving, but experiencing the refuge on foot is a good way to get more up-close and personal with these important natural wetlands and the various creatures that inhabit them.
