Wild Wednesdays: Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. Free for ONC members/ $2 children/ $3 seniors/ $4 adults. Meet in the visitor center. Today’s topic is “Winter Sleepers.” During the cold, snowy days of winter some animals choose to sleep the days away. Meet a few animals that spend their winter days and nights in the dark. Find out how they hibernate and take a trip to the Ogden Nature Center’s own bear den.
Feb. 8: “Wild Romance: A Valentines Day Special.” Have you ever wondered if animals flirt with one another? Meet some of the Ogden Nature Center’s resident birds and reptiles and discover the unique ways these animals attract a partner. Then make your very own nature-themed Valentine.
Feb. 15: “Owl Tales.” Are owls really wise? Get the answer to that question and many others as we meet three different owls and decode the mysteries that surround these amazing birds.
Feb. 22: “Accipiters: Aces of the Forest.” Sharpies! Coops! Goshawks! Utah is home to these three types of accipiters, also known as the true hawks. Meet the Ogden Nature Center’s own goshawk and discover how accipiters survive in forests.
Earth-Friendly Valentines: 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday. $7 members/ $8 non-members. Ages 6 and up. Create special Valentines using recycled and natural materials with local artist, Nancy Clark. All materials will be provided. Please call to pre-register by Thursday. Class size is limited to 15 participants.
Preschool Discovery Days: “Motionless Marvels.” 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. Feb. 6 or 7. $4 child/adult pair for members, $5 non-members. Ages 3-5. From towering trees to tiny rocks, many of nature’s wonders hardly move at all. Sing songs and hear stories, play games and learn through hands-on discovery what makes nature so marvelous. A non-refundable deposit of 50 percent must be paid in advance to pre-register groups of 5 children or more. Pre-registration is required as classes fill up quickly.
Nature is for Lovers: 7-9 p.m. Feb. 11. $30 per couple. Ages 21 and up. Come to the Ogden Nature Center for an evening of wine and desserts and learn about love wildlife style. Play a fun couples guessing game about animal and plant mating rituals, meet one of February’s feathered lovers and take an optional romantic night walk around the Center trails. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by 4 p.m. Feb. 10.
Join the Great Backyard Bird Count: Feb. 17-20 in your own backyard. Count for fun. Count for the future. Bird and nature fans throughout North American are invited to join tens of thousands of everyday bird watchers for the 12th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Scout Saturdays: 9 a.m.-noon Feb. 18. Fulfill merit badge requirements for Native vs. Invasive, Conservation, and Venomous Reptiles. $5 per scout. Have our teacher/naturalists help your scout pass off badge requirements during one of our 45-minute workshops. Reservations and a non-refundable deposit required.
Wasatch Audubon Society presentation: 7 p.m. Feb. 21. Free. Dr. Steve Clark, Weber State University professor, will present Reconnecting With Your Wildness — Adventures With An Etho-Botantist. Dr. Clark will speak about world-wide experiences with people/plant relationships. Meet in the Visitor Center.
Growing Up Wild Teacher Workshop: 4-8 p.m. Feb. 22. $40 includes two resource guides. This workshop will introduce educators to Project Learning Tree and Project WILD’s Early Childhood Guide which integrates nature-based exploration, art, literature, math, music and movement, and outdoor play into early childhood education programs. The activities highlight the importance of kinetic learning and engagement by incorporating music and movement using an accompanying music CD. Eligible for four re-licensure points. Handmade Journals with Adele Greenleaf: 6 p.m. Feb. 28. $30 members/ $35 non-members (includes materials). Ages 14 and up. Create a simple yet sophisticated journal with a beautifully sewn binding. Perfect for field, garden or travel notes. Please pre-register by Feb. 22.
WEBER PATHWAYS
Wasatch Hikers: 6:30 p.m. tonight. Evening hike to Skyline Trail in Davis County. The south trail follows the foothills south from Fernwood Park. Some creeks have bridges and others must be forded. A great trail to hike at night with its panoramic views. You can see the lights from Salt Lake City to Ogden and across the lake. About three miles round-trip with 500 feet in elevation change. Turn around time is 8 p.m. Meet at Fernwood Park trailhead just north of Adams Canyon.
OGDEN SIERRA CLUB
Wheeler Creek Loop snowshoe: 10 a.m. Saturday. This five-mile tour of the less-developed trails at Snowbasin is always a favorite. This loop starts at the Art Nord trail head and follows the East Fork and Middle Fork Wheeler Creek trails. Call John for meeting place and time, 801-985-6854.
Mill Creek Canyon snowshoe: 9 a.m. Feb. 18. This is a must do adventure for those who like winter activities. Five to six miles round trip, 3 to 4 hours, moderate. We will pick a route that offers the most snow and provides the best views of the snow-capped mountains. Perhaps we will see a moose, for they winter in this area. Bird Walks: Today at Perry Nature Park. Meet at McDonald’s (1838 W. 2700 North, just east of Exit 349 on I-15) at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast or at 9 a.m. to carpool.
Feb. 8: Riverdale Trail (South). Meet at McDonald’s (Riverdale Road and 900 West) at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast or at 9 a.m. at the trailhead parking lot (from Riverdale Road, south on 700 West for one block, then left on 4600 West to lot on right at the end of road).
Feb. 15: Willard Bay State Park. Meet at McDonald’s (1838 W. 2700 North) at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast or at 9 a.m. to carpool. Remember, this is a fee area.
Feb. 22: South Ogden Nature Park. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at McDonald’s (5745 S. Harrison) for breakfast or at 8 a.m. to carpool.
Feb. 29: Antelope Island Causeway and Fielding Garr Ranch. Meet at McDonald’s (Riverdale Road and 900 West) at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast or at 9 a.m. to carpool. Alternatively, you can meet the group at the parking lot near the entrance at 9:30 a.m. Remember this is a fee area.
Board meeting: The Board of Directors meets at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Ogden Nature Center (966 W. 12th St.). All members are welcome.
Bald Eagle Day: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 11. Come to Compton’s Knoll at Salt Creek WMA. Wasatch Audubon members will be assisting DWR personnel there. Call Jack Rensel at 801-399-0240 for more information. DWR personnel will also be at Farmington Bay WMA from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Field Trip: 8 a.m. Feb. 25. Morgan Bald Eagle Count. Meet at the DWR Office in S. Ogden (515 E. 5300 South) at 8 a.m. This is a great opportunity to see Bald and Golden Eagles and Turkeys. We will stop at the Spring Chicken Inn in Morgan for Breakfast.

Kayak roll session: 8-10 p.m. Thursday and Feb. 16 at Weber State Swimming Pool. $8 with own equipment/$20 equipment included. Ages 16 and up. No prior experience necessary, but swimming proficiency required. Come join the experienced team from Rapid Progression Kayak School as they provide some great instruction on how to roll. Cooperative Presidents’ Day backcountry yurt trip: Leave 7 a.m. Feb. 17 and return 8 p.m. Feb. 20. Backcountry ski/splitboard trip to yurt in Bloomington Canyon, Idaho. $35 WSU students, $50 non-students. Avalanche safety equipment required and will be provided as needed.
