SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources is offering a free field trip to watch ospreys in their natural habitat. Those wishing to participate should meet at the Rockport Reservoir dam about 45 miles east of Salt Lake City between 6 and 7 p.m. on July 30. Watchable Wildlife coordinator Bob Walters will lead the caravan to Summit County. He says the birds with five-foot wing spans are easy to spot as are their chimney-like nests that can be 3 feet tall. The birds should be feeding their young that were born this spring. Walters will have spotting scopes and binoculars available but encourages participants to bring their own. Participants also will learn about the osprey’s ability to make spectacular feet-first plunge dives to catch fish just under the water’s surface.
